CARL ARDEN HINDS

Carl Arden Hinds is a Portland based artist whose paintings explore the tension between spontaneity and structure. Working in layers of acrylic, pastel, and charcoal, he builds each surface through dragging, scraping, saturation, erasure, and revision. Fields of color collide and reassemble, while traces of earlier gestures remain visible, giving the work, a sense of movement, history, and lived experience. The resulting paintings are physical, weathered, and emotionally  charged  records of an intuitive process in which discovery is as important as intention.

An Old Town resident, Hinds has spent decades creating opportunities and communities for artists. He founded School of Rock in Portland and Seattle, and helped establish numerous other schools throughout the west. He is also the founder of OTO Arts and Music, a nonprofit cultural space in old town. His broader creative career includes songwriting, production, and performing with Columbia records artists,  Dandelion, The Hell Yeahs, Masters of Karate and The Exploding Whales.... experiences that continue to inform the rhythm and energy of his visual work.
